Medical Institute for Sexual Health

The Medical Institute for Sexual Health is a nonprofit, community organization whose main goal is to decrease prevalence of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. I found this company to be the most interesting, although it was one of the least paying, because their initiatives make sense! The organization uses research conducted in their facilities of Austin and El Paso, Texas in order to provide the most up to date information. They choose to educate the most influential targets in an adolescent's life in order to defeat the epidemic of teen pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted infections. First, the company starts with parents by educating them in the fields of parenting skills and communication with their children. They use videos to explain how important communication is, how a parent can bring up these issues with their child, and also include current sexual health information. The company uses different videos to also educate teens and college students. The information gained from research is put into these videos and are to serve as an entertaining method of educating adolescents about these touchy topics. One of the most interesting initiative that is discussed on the website is the "Medical Education Initiative" where seminars are held for medical professionals in order to make sure they are holding current updated information about sexual health topics. I was surprised to find this on the website because we would assume that medical professionals would have complete knowledge about these topics but this is not always the case. The organization is willing to not only conduct research about these topics, but also use the information found and present it to the community in so many different ways. This represents Public Health at it's greatest!
